HYBRID ECOLOGIES

VISUALIZING THE ERTHLY TRACES OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

Centro Cultural La Moneda and Escuela de Diseño of Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile extend an invitation to explore the exhibition Hybrid Ecologies, a project designed by academics Manuela Garretón and Martín Tironi, which explores the relations between the operational logics of AI and the environmental costs of this tech industry.

This installation shows us the water footprint required for the generation of images with Artificial Intelligence through an interactive experience, inviting us to reflect on its ecological impacts, its extractivist logic and the transitions necessary for sustainable habitability. This project is endorsed by Facultad de Arquitectura, Diseño and Estudios Urbanos (FADEU); Vicerrectoría de Investigación and Dirección de Arte y Cultura of Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile; Fondecyt N°1210006, Núcleo Milenio Futures of Artificial Intelligence Research (FAIR); Centro de Desarrollo Urbano Sustentable (CEDEUS) and Centro Nacional de Inteligencia Artificial (CENIA).

About the curators

Manuela Garretón | Design graduate of Pontificia Universidad Católica, Master from New York University Interactive Telecommunications Program and Doctor in Computer Science of Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile. Manuela Garretón is an academic at the School of Design of the aforementioned university and associate researcher at the Urban Complexity Lab, University of Applied Sciences Potsdam, Germany. She has led various data visualization projects in relation to public policies, urban planning, neuroscience, subjective well-being and she has explored different formats for their representation, from data journalism to interactive installations.

Martín Tironi | Sociology graduate of Pontificia Universidad Católica, Master in Sociology of Université Paris-Sorbonne V, Doctor of Center de Sociologie de l’Innovation at the École des Mines de Paris and Post-Doctorate from this same centre. During 2018 he acted as Visiting Fellow at the Centre for Invention and Social Process at Goldsmiths University of London. Currently he serves as academic and director of Escuela de Diseño at Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile and of Núcleo Milenio Futures of Artificial Intelligence Research (FAIR) and as associate researcher at Centro de Desarrollo Urbano Sustentable (Cedeus). Tironi was part of the curatorial team in charge of the pavilion “Tectonic Resonances: from human-centered design to planet-centered design” that was awarded a gold medal at the 2021 London Design Biennale. He recently edited (Tironi, Chilet, Ureta Marín, Hermansen) the book Design For More-Than-Human Futures: Towards Post-Anthropocentric Worlding (Routledge, 2023) and is a member of the International Advisory Board of «Dis-positions: Troubling Methods and Theory in STS» of Bristol University Press, and of Revista Diseña magazine.
